Mobile World Congress: 10 best new phones

1-Huawei Ascend D Quad

Why? It's the world's fastest quad-core smartphone.

1.2GHz K3V2 quad-core processor.
Nvidia's new Tegra 3
ARM Cortex A9 cores with a 64-bit memory bus.
8MP camera
stunning 4.5-inch HD display
Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

2-LG Optimus 4X HD
Why? It's the world's second fastest quad-core smartphone.

LG Optimus 4X HD catches the roving eye. Inside the 8.9mm chassis you'll find Nvidia's new 1.5GHz Tegra 3 processor with GeForce graphics. A 4.7-inch HD display, 16GB of storage, Ice Cream Sandwich and an 8MP camera round off an impressive specification. Technology overkill for Angry Birds Space though.

3-LG Optimus Vu
Why? A striking rival to the love it/hate it Samsung Galaxy Note

Its 5-inch HD display is, we can't argue with you, gorgeous. The rest of the specification – a dual-core Snapdragon CPU, Android 2.3 and an 8 Megapixel camera – feels more 2011 than 2012. But this heavyweight handset (168g) certainly stands out.

4-HTC One X
Why? Quad-core power meets new HTC Sense.

the HTC One X packs a 1.5GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor inside a chassis that takes its design cues from the dual-core HTC Sensation XL. It's a good-looking phone. Even in pink. Note the 4.7-inch HD IPS display, 32GB of storage and 8MP rear camera. As for the software, Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)

5-Nokia 808 Pureview
Why? It's got a 41 Megapixel camera. 41 Megapixels!

The Nokia 808 Pureview is an oddity. It runs the Symbian OS, has a sub-HD (360 x 640 pixel) 4-inch touchscreen and an unremarkable 1.3GHz ARM 11 processor. and 41 Megapixel camera phone

6-Sony Xperia P

Why? This dual-core smartphone has a 'magical' display.

this P edition is worth a closer look. Not for the design. It's a bit chunky, if we're honest. Not for the 1GHz dual-core processor or the Android 2.3 OS of yesteryear.

Instead, the new 540 x 960 resolution 'WhiteMagic' display adds a white pixel to the RGB panel to improve on the performance of Sony's Mobile Bravia Engine.

7-Asus Padfone
Why? It's three devices in one.

the Padfone has a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display, runs Android 4.0 and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual core CPU.

8-Samsung Galaxy Beam
Why? It's a pocketable projector.

he Galaxy Beam i8520 appeared a year later. The new Samsung Galaxy Beam is the first projector phone designed for the mass market.

9-Panasonic Eluga
Why? It's so pretty…

the Panasonic Eluga hopes to tempt buyers with a sleek, 7.8mm-thick chassis and a lightweight (103g) build.

The 4.3-inch 960 x 540 pixel display is roomy, without being ridiculously so. While the 1GHz dual-core processor is no slouch

10- Orange Santa Clara
Why? It's got an Intel Atom inside.

We suspect the rest of the specification, which includes a 4.03-inch display, Android 2.3 (upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich) and an 8MP camera
